's the real reality of what's happening out there. >> you hear mitt romney pivoting talking about the real unemployment rate at 11%, so i -- i guess that's his pivot coming off the unemployment rate yesterday. randi, why does all this matter? as you mentioned off the top, the economy by far the number one issue with americans. take a look at this, from our cnn/orc international poll. we did it about a week ago before the first debate but i don't think it will change people's perceptions. by far the economy remains the top issue on the minds of americans. it's been that way since late 2007 when the u.s. economy went into a recession, and how do americans feel about which candidate is doing a better job on the economy right now? they were split going into the first debate. we'll take a look at polling coming out that was conducted after the first debate. again, right there, can you see that number. that 48%, that really says it all. the economy is the most important issue on the minds of american voters, and what's the most important economic issue, jobs, randi? >> which is why there is so m

they needed to do something. the first thing you're talking about with mitt romney and foreign policy had been this trip to europe, europe, poland, israel, the olympics hadn't gone so well. now they have something to talk about. how did it go? i think the main difference and what they strive to do is paint a contrast between them and the obama administration. the contrast becomes part of their posturing. how are we going to approach foreign policy differently? the posture is that obama's foreign policy is lead from behind, i think mitt romney is really lean forward. we're trying to use our influence in the middle east to -- but really we're trying to use our influence in the region to get the outcomes we want in order to shape the policies that we want, in order to receive the outcomes that we want in the middle east. >> let's be honest, posturing is what we've got here. was his speech heavy on detail or light on detail? >> i'm stealing this from someone on twitter who said the difference between romney and obama on foreign policy is romney says speak louder but carry the same stick. sort of t

. had you already tried to talk to mitt romney and he wasn't listening? >> well, we've had a couple of differences and i support governor romney and think he will make a great president, but on foreign policy, i think there's too much agreement between the republicans and democrats. but i think the people are tired of war. when you talk to republicans or democrats now, i think it's almost universal. people want to come home from afghanistan. you know, there's such great sorrow when you think about our same police and soldiers being helped. so i've seen a great movement in recent weeks towards really wanting to come home and i don't want governor romney to think it is a good thing to appear more bellicose. i think there are more republicans and independents who don't necessarily want a president who will begin a war in syria. i think it's very important that we not express that as what we're trying to do. >> had you spoken to him privately? >> i spoke with him a couple of months ago and my swren impression when i talked with him is he has a healthy reluctance for war. i don't think h

? >> reporter: well, talk about a lymentum stopper there, jim. i mean, what it has done it really rob romney of one of his sost reliable lines in his hempaign speeches. i've heard him say over and eser, under president obama, has neyment has never been below 8%. obviously, he's not saying that now. instead what we saw yesterday and what he's going to say here in this rally tonight is it d bed be better and it would be better if he were president, reminding people of just how much americans in this country are struggling and saying those numbers just don't reflect how bad this economy really is. >> axelrod: what else do you expect, jan, in the run-up to the second debate? foreporter: well, what we've already seen is more focus, more aggressiveness coming from governor romney after that debate, but, jim, there is one other thing that is so striking. i've never seen it in the 10 months i've covered this campaign as what we saw last night in st. petersburg, mitt mneyey, very private man, does not like to talk about himself-- eaich is kind of unusual for a nclitician-- told several personal stori

mitt romney is and was last night. i mean, if he was talking, he was speaking last night, he was lying. and look, mitt romney had a good night, but you know, even a, you know, blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. >> are these dirty attacks, calling mitt romney a liar. is it a good idea for the democrats. we're back with our panel. brian some suggest this is classless to come and attack mitt romney for lying when the president didn't seen prepared and shell shocked and that's the response. he was so shell shocked that mitt romney was lying that he didn't know how to respond. >> and mitt romney's facts were tricky, we don't have time for that. let's include john sununu, romney's surrogate who said that obama is lazy, incompetent. has no idea what's going on. on both sides comments being made and let's not make this one-sided when you're talking about it. >> clayton: is that fair, tammy? >> americans and i think the tea party is a good example of this want to be told the truth. we have impressions of these guys and americans are going to make up their own mind and we know that p

, right field and maybe we would view a better idea who mitt romney is. he will talk how we are going do get out of the black hole, what we will do the next four years and keep paul ryan to task and not talk about the grand ideas but, actually, telling us exactly what is going on. >> we thought we would get a lot of that, we get the specifics from congressman ryan, with his budget plan laid out but it doesn't seem like the republicans want him to talk about it. why? >> what you saw in the last debate, mitt romney had a chance to speak for 90 minutes about his policies and plans. the problem with the rallies when you cover them people are looking for the 30-second sound bite, not for a long, detailed expose. >>shepard: but bill clinton gave us specifics. >> no one has been more specific on budgets and entitlement reform than paul ryan. with regard to -- look, we are not going to negotiate with ourselves. the only people with the budget are the republicans with plans to save social security and medicare. >> that doesn't get us anyone. if paul ryan knows his numbers he is thought allowed to

hour, the woman behind the race for the white house, first lady michelle obama and ann romney talk to "good housekeeping" about their causes, their families. revealing some things you might not have known about the candidates. >>> when is the right time to start giving your kids an allowance? and how much should you be giving them? we're going to tell you the average for every age and the lessons you're teaching your kids about hopefully saving money. >> does allowance have some inflation over the years? >> i believe so. so will the tooth fairy. >> i know the tooth fairy has. >>> plus, a little bit of spice makes everything so nice. we're going to be making an easy spiced orange pound cake perfect for a halloween treat in just a little bit. >> but first, let's get a check on the weather. it's chilly outside. >> it's a tad brisk. let's see what we have for you today. the briskness will continue in the northeast and new england. risk of strong storms making their way along the missouri/arkansas border. we've got some beautiful weather in the pacific northwest, very wet through the so

about this. i talked to another romney campaign aide yesterday in virginia who said they would have preferred these poll numbers to come out in november, not october. >> which is also, cnn, we'll have you are our own poll numbers out take at 4:00 p.m. but let's talk now about the obama team. are they hitting the panic button or are they just as some people are saying this is one poll, two polls, still very tight? >> i'm not sure if they're hitting the panic button. i think they're hitting the sesame street button. the obama campaign has been using big bird pretty heavily to go after mitt romney after that debate perform answer last week. and what you've seen the obama campaign do is lit gate tigate t debate argument that mitt romney was dishonestanswer last week. and what you've seen the obama campaign do is litigate the post debate argument that mitt romney was dishonest during the first faceoff, so they'll be hammering him on that, putting big bird out on the campaign trail, he they have the new ad that came out this morning showing mitt romney going after big bird. and we also ha

i'd be most concerned about because everybody i've talked to all said romney won that debate. >> i heard a few people on the street saying they're die hard supporters. i get you. i could go on and on, but we've got breaking news, so i have to say thank you to my guests. thank you for being here. here's the breaking news i was talking about. gje jerry sandusky, he speaks. and he doesn't just speak to mself in his prison cell, he recorded it and released it for all of us to hear and by my watch, he's just hours away from a very serious sentencing. we're going to have that statement and you're going to hear it, next. it's hard to see opportunity in today's challenging environment. unless you have the right perspective. bny mellon wealth management has the vision and experience to look beyond the obvious. we'll uncover opportunities, find hidden risk, and make success a reality. bny mellon wealth management >>> breaking news for you right now. jerry sandusky has been speaking out loud from his jail cell. his attorney is confirming that the voice on the tape is that of jerry sandusky. w

tools for the sears craftsman brand. any time people talk about bain these days, they think of romney, but he has nothing to do with this. >> i looked around for benghazi stuff on the cover of "new york times." >> and you're looking right at the bain story. >> that movie really did cause the whole libya thing. we apologized to libyans for the movie -- >> it was 100% wrong. went on "meet the press." >> they got something about rom ne's message about trade. they're going back and looking at bain's china. >> owns an auto manufacturing outfit in china. how he has a piece of it and they're trying to make a case out of it. >> wants more money. >> any more progress on the tax issue? >> i don't. on the issue of benghazi, though it's unrelated, i told you this earlier. i saw the movie "argo" last night. it's coming out i think later this week. >> i say the previews. >> and it was fantastic. and given what's going on in the middle east and what's going on in the world today, if you have an opportunity to see it, it is worth going for friday night dates. it's hardly a date movie. >> ben affleck

of sonya sote omier. mitt romney is using family. he talks about american values and bipartisanship. the chief marketing officer of cultural strategy, he sees obama and romney targeting specific groups in the latino community. romney chasing the more conservative cuban american vote, obama focusing on puerto rican and mexican american votes. he says to get these votes the message doesn't have to be delivered in spanish. >> we have to keep in mind that the latino community is not monolithic and they prefer to information in english. so, you have to reach latinos not only in language, but cultu culture. >> reporter: president obama has a commanding lead in latinos nationwide, but in battleground states like colorado, california and florida that mitt romney needs to win over and the fight is on. ed lavandera, cnn, san antonio, texas. >> we'll look at the impact of latino voters throughout the morning. next hour, the economy, not immigration is issue number one among latinos. how does that play into the campaign? we'll get some perspective from the press secretary. remember, be sure to

'm on food stamps and i'm telling governor romney, i don't feel like i'm entitled but i need it. in talking about taxes too as the caller mentioned, we heard mitt romney say with wolf blitzer is that the wealthy are doing fine and i don't care about the wealthy. the question is why do you want to lower their tax rate 20%? he's saying that's not his plan? host going back and forth and obama campaign is trying to making a campaign issue out of it. if the wealthy is doing fine do who bowles-simpson says. he keeps talking of bowles- simpson every chance he has, which had does not slash government spending immediately. and it raise taxes on the wealthy a little bit to close that gap. the ryan budget would have, which he endorsed, mitt romney endorsed and put ryan on the ticket, would have tremendously slashing effect in government spending and social programs. it cuts taxes further. beyond the bush tax cuts for the wealthy. i think there's still a lot of back and forth flip-flopping whatever you want to call it strategic ambiguity what mitt romney is saying. host: let's go to stamford, connectic

it? >> let's talk about the numbers, john. mitt romney still getting post debate bounce. you can't say any more that debates don't matter. the new cnn poll, poll of polls, mitt romney has a slight lead with likely voters, 48% to 47%. his performance certainly showed that you can't say it doesn't matter anymore. there is no bigger swing state than ohio, where you are. >> reporter: the history tells you no republican has ever been elected president without winning the state of ohio. can you do the math and have romney win without this state? yes. is it likely? no. before the debate some polls had him down as many as nine points in ohio. new cnn poll row leased last night has him down four, 51-47. another group, american research group show ed romney up a point in ohio. no question. just like in the national polls, a bit of a boost. romney is up in the suburbs, up among independents. there's signs of strength here from romney, we can tell you there are a few soft spots he needs to work on. >> john king in ohio, covering the debates as well. thank you very much. watch live coverage o

. that is a difference. we talk about it before. romney two-point lead. margin of error is tied. first time in a year, real clear politic average, he has the lead in the average of recent polls. what about this? the panel, jonah goldberg, from national review online. kirsten powers for daily beast. syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. charles, today's developments and well, big bird. >> democrats are actually running an ad showing big bird and contracting it with the bad guys on wall street. >> let's just play it. might as well. >> i'm just a prop here. >> bret: right. you're teeing it up. play it. >> bernie madoff, ken lay, dennis kezlowsky, criminals, glut top of greed, evil genius who tower over them. one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird. big bird. big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> big, yellow, menace to our economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about. it's "sesame street." >> bret: charles? >> this could be the worst ad i've ever seen. i make an appeal to people in chicago. run this ad every night over and over again, spend all of your money. and t

romney will talk about the economy a lot. he's going to give a foreign policy speech today. overall, it's about the economy. it's making the argument of who can better the economy, because it's ailing. they both agree the economy is ailing. who can fix it and make the arguments better? >> quick answer, does it hurt the president to be in hollywood when, or in california when it doesn't matter as much as virginia does now? or is it okay? >> i think he's got to raise money. but i do think it hurts him a little bit. not a game changer. >> bob cusack, you're a game changer. >> thank you. >> managing editor of the hill. good to see you. >> thanks. >> tony, over to you. >>> an update on the violence in syria, where the violence with turkey continues. >> first, a nascar nightmare. what sparked a 20 car pileup crash that cost tony stewart the win. we'll be back. hey, what are you drinkin'? pumpkin coffee for the morning. and i've got my pumpkin k-cup packs for at home. now i can have my pumpkin coffee any time i want it. pumpkin's perfect. it's dunkin' with the press of a button. new pumpkin k-

infected. >>> it's been one of the romney campaign's longest running talking points. 43 months of unemployment, over 8%, and the president to blame. >> 8% unemployment for over -- how many, 43 months? we still have unemployment over 8%. he told us to hold unemployment below 8%. >> unemployment above 8% month after month after month. >> but all that changed yesterday. the bureau of labor statistics reporting the unemployment rate falling to 7.8%. where does the romney campaign go from here? i'm joined by a republican spokesman. romney has said the president's policies right-hand turn working and the 8% was an indication of that. what's the response now? >> well, i think clearly the number of americans who are still looking for work, the people -- the work force participation rate is still far, far too high, so i don't think that 7.8% unemployment is something anybody, even the democrats, are cheering about. so i think that the president still clearly has a case to make for why another four years are going to be better under his leadership. >> the democrats would say, as they've

of what he and mitt romney have run on just like romney did last week. carl cameron is traveling with the governor. he just wrapped autopsy rally in ohio. good evening to you. he was talking today about his position on abortion. how did that come up, carl? >> yesterday when we were in ohio, governor romney was asked by one register to talk about his abortion position and he said he didn't know of any legislation that might come up that would affect his agenda. that caused an instant slam from the obama campaign who suggested romney was changing his position. back in 2005, he was pro-choice prior to that and became pro-life. today on the campaign trail here in ohio, mr. romney was asked again to clarify and this is kind of hard to hear. it was a very crowded restaurant in delaware, ohio. here is what he said. >> i think i said time and again, i'm a pro-life candidate. i'll be a pro-life president. the actions i'll take immediately are to remove funding for planned parenthood, will not be part of my budget. and also i've indicated i'll reverse the mexico city position of theeinstat

who that 20% is. that's the sample i'd be most concerned about because everybody i've talked to all said romney won that debate. >> i heard a few people on the street saying they're die hard supporters. and look, i know, i get you. i could go on and on, but we've got breaking news, so i have to say thank you to my guests. thank you for being here. here's the breaking news i was talking about. jerry sandusky, he speaks. and he doesn't just speak to himself in his prison cell, he recorded it and released it for all of us to hear and by my watch, he's just hours away from a very serious sentencing. we're going to have that statement and you're going to hear it, next. [ male announcer ] it's simple physics... a body at rest tends to stay at rest... while a body in motion tends to stay in motion. staying active can actually ease arthritis symptoms. but if you have arthritis, staying active can be difficult. prescription celebrex can help relieve arthritis pain so your body can stay in motion. because just one 200mg celebrex a day can provide 24 hour relief for many with arthritis pain an

. this is not the recovery we all wanted but we're on the road. for mitt romney it does take away one of talking points he has been very big on, number of consecutive months that the number has been at 8% or above, that line is gone from his speech. short term positives are there for president obama but long term you look at the historical numbers in terms of unemployment in presidential reelection years and depth of the political challenges are great here. >> heather: i'll ask you more about historically in a moment but the numbers have been called into question. there is actually a huge disconnect between the modest of new jobs report and significant decrease in the unemployment rate. jack welch, he went to as far to suggest that the numbers may be manipulated by the obama administration. do you think that the numbers add up? >> i think the suggestion that the numbers was cooked is relatively ridiculous. that being said. economists at the labor department will admit freely that there is a lot of margin of error in these numbers. a month after each job report these numbers are revised upward or downward.

. we are talking about the tax plans of president obama and candidate romney. extending the bush tax cuts, what is the cost for the richest 1% and the rest of the 99%? guest: it will cost about $5.50 trillion over 10 years. the president obama planned to not extend the bush tax cut on income over $250,000 only saves about $1 trillion. host: you are nodding your head. guest: a lot of people do not recognize what is in play. the bush tax cuts went to the top 2%, 3%. they received trillionths, depending on how you count the numbers. both candidates are proposing to extend both of those tax cuts. it will be difficult to do that unless semiserious plan to control entitlement spending. the president certainly does not have that. i think it is an open question how serious governor romney is about that. there was talk of an increase in proposed medicare spending over the next decade, which is not exactly a step towards fiscal responsibility. host of these comments -- -- host: these comments from twitter -- host: rosalie, conn., independent caller line. hello. caller: good morning. my questio

tell you that the mitt romney i know. this is a guy who -- i was talking to a family in massachusetts the other day. cheryl and mark nixon. their kids were hit in a car crash, four of them -- two of them were paralyzed. the romney's did not know that rid the to the same turf but never met before. mitt asked if he did, over christmas. he brought his boys, his wife gives. later on he said, i know you're struggling, mark. don't worry about their college, all paid for it. mitt romney doesn't tell these stories. the nixons told this story. when he told the story, he said it wasn't the help, the cash help, it was that he gave his time and has consistently. this is a man who gave 30% of his income to charity, more than the two of us combined. romney is a good man. he cares about one hatter% of americans in this country. with respect to that i think the vice president knows the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. [applause] [laughter] >> but i always say what i mean and so does romney. >> we want to get people out of @rty, in the middle-class. >> luis rodriguez, you're the vice-

a story when you have both the romney campaign and the obama campaign attacking each other in a political debate. very different agenda when we are talking about the tragic death of four americans, to allow it to become a political game. >> it is not politicized. untuck about what was said and what then came out. this demonstration has been caught in lies. jay carney is beside himself denying things that he is on tape saying. they never said -- it was about the video. claiming that -- >> that's not what they're saying, and you know that. lou: okay. >> the political problem here is a simple one. the president's best suit is killing obama -- osama bin law and end of an agenda for. what this does is weakens his best suit and it is a severe political problem as well as a moral one, and americans tend not to like american citizens killed overseas. they take it personally. if there is any question about it it will take even more deeply personally. lou: also a political problem for the president because he has been known not to be attending his briefings in person. lou: this is not the talking p

with ryan tonight and how that's going to go after the last presidential debate. want to talk about that. mitt romney's big win in last week's debate, of course, receiving now about, we understand, in the polls how long it's going to last, we really don't know. that question, of course, could be answered tonight. we're talking about this one and only vice presidential debate from our senior political analyst and national editorial director and, ron, you and i were at those vice presidential debates. last go round back in 2008 when a record 70 million people watch that night. there was so much excitement, and i think there was a lot of curiosity, how sarah palin was going to go up against joe biden and a lot that came out of that debate. what do we make of the expectations tonight between biden and now ryan? >> well, first of all, i would be surprised if the audience was as big as it was in 2008 when sarah palin was a political and cultural phenomenon. the romney-obama debate received an enormous audience, even bigger than we expected. i was at the last debate in danville, the vice presid

on the economy. >> shep: you were talking about policy. what is it that governor romney says he would do differently? >> well, there haven't been a lot of specifics. there are some differences, however. for instance, mr. romney has said he will move to impose sanctions on iraq -- iran with the international community much more aggressively, as well as additional pressure from the united states. he argues that he will enable the rebels in syria to arm themselves more effectively, to go up against the iran-backed regime of assad who has been crushing rebels and killing civilians. and mr. romney said he will link relations with egypt, now led by pot morsi of the muslim brotherhood, what has been described virulent anti-west and says our relationship will be based on trade, something mr. romney said should be much more aggressively policed and pursued, free trade and fairer trade with china. those really the only major distinctions emphasized today and outlined in terms of specifics from mr. romney. shep? >> shep: carl cameron live in virginia. as i mentioned, president obama's team was resp

to remember that democrats were talking about paul ryan and paul ryan's budget months before governor romney even chose him to be his running mate, this was already an issue, it was already in ads, and something that was already part of the conversation at the congressional level, before paul ryan was named the v.p. running mate. >> reporter: here outside buffalo, ny, congresswoman kathy hochul is perhaps the clearest example of democrats' national strategy. hochul won a special election in 2011 in a republican district, running against the ryan plan and its changes to medicare. national strategists thought they had a winning issue. in the meantime, hochul's district, the 27th, was redrawn to lean even more republican. hochul is still on the offense when it comes to the ryan budget. but she's facing criticism from republicans for her support of president obama's health care reform law. >> when times are tough, you decide where you've got to cut. but i am telling you, we don't do it on the backs of our seniors. this is not an entitlement program, like a lot of people in washington call it. it

channels to talk the two nations off of the path of war if that is possible. >> and this their is a -- that president obama lost the first debate to mitt romney. >> now, the first crucial first encounter passed. what do the candidates need to do to keep it going or get the momentum back going? we fut putt that question to former san francisco mayor willie brown and the chronicle's joe garafoli. what should they do? >> obama has to re-establish his dominance on the intellectual side, on the -- [ indiscernible ] side, he has to re-establish his dominance on the excitement side. can he do that? i don't know. >> and mitt romney? >> mitt romney has to keep going, keep plowing through in the same way. he was concise and crisp. like the ceo and chief that he aspires to be. >> it was interesting. this is the first time i ever recalled seeing the former massachusetts governor mitt romney show up on stage. until now, he's been completely avoiding, you never would have known he was the governor in massachusetts. met last debate, everything was governors of massachusetts

talking points, why does every single liberal say no one called out mitt romney's lies? i get responses here, why don't you guys call out mitt romney's lies? the middle of the debate, it is not up to the media nor the moderator to call out lies. it is up to the president to do that. so they should be asking president obama why he didn't do that if he felt mitt romney was lying. >> well, i think there were moments where he challenged mitt romney what he was saying, but i disagree and think the moderator's job is that the things said on stage is congruent with things said in the past. instead of calling the person a liar, you need to have the background to say, this is what you said on this day. >> if he has to say this about what somebody said, it's up to the president to defend himself. >> absolutely. i'm not trying to say to the president, that he shouldn't take responsibility for his awful performance, he should have, but i think some of the criticism to the moderator is also justified. >> go ahead, anna. >> look, don, what the liberals are doing is post-debate spinning. it's whining.

. [applause] >> which we see live where the members of the obama and romney campaign will talk to reporters after the date. we are going to leave the camera into the media center here in a couple of minutes. hundreds of volunteers have been behind the scenes in the media center testing the digital network capacity preparing to cover the debate. >> [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] have been aligned among parts of the data area. the vice presidential debate will be life thursday night on c-span, seized in radio and c-span.org. in addition to the presidential and vice presidential debate, the c-span debate from the house, senate and governor's races from across the country. senator scott brown and his democratic challenger elizabeth warren meet tonight for the third floor debates in the massachusetts senate race. you can hear that live on the companion network c-span at seven eastern tonight. we spoke with a political reporter of the massachusetts senate race. >> we are joined by national journal julie sobel. this is in the

, what's the thinking on governor romney's bounce in the polls since that first big debate? >> they are very pumped here. the romney campaign is quite excited. they say there is more to come. they're building and talking about their ground game, grassroots, 4 million people have been contacted here in ohio alone. 4 1/2 million. that's more than a third of the overall population. the polls have ticked up. romney has closed the gap, leading in some of the national polls, within the mar i didn't know of error, and in most of the battle ground states, he's either closed the gap and in a couple of cases, gone up by a point or two. these are swings in the polls. he's eliminated any bounce the president had gotten from his convention with the own bounce he got last week. with the vice presidential debate this week and two more presidential debathes and generally both campaigns have recognized for the better part of the last year that this race was always going to hover at a close to even tie, 45-47 apiece and it will be decided probably in the last two weeks to ten days as that la

are in poverty, we need to continue to take care of them. as i drew the difference between governor romney and myself, when he talked about those in poverty, i said they haven't chosen to be there. i would not cut our food stamp programs now because we need to make sure those folks can continue to be taken care of. but let's get them a job and get them back to work so families can progress. >> again, this is just about numbers. if you except this tax cut number, the only way to account for it is to have massive cut to these programs that do put people to work and grow jobs and take care people when they are out of work. you have to look at the work i have done. i've committed my life to standing up to the most vulnerable among us. some of the work i do on these issues may be don't get the big headlines. i wrote a piece of legislation, the support of housing investment act, named after a great advocate for anti-homeless this in connecticut that would triple the amount of housing units built for the most vulnerable among us. people have very grave mental illnesses and physical handicaps that

can you respond if in the back row of the audience mitt romney stood up and said mr. kaplan, you are being defeatist. you are walking away from america's historical role, america is the essential power and you are talking about necessary decline. >> i am not being defeatist. i am being sly. i want american influence to extend long into the decades but it cannot do that bearing the same exact level of burden we have been bearing now. in the middle east we cannot confront russia, cannot confront china and be the hegemon in the greater middle east in leslie. we have to move closer to vladimir putin to balance against china but at the same time not let countries like vietnam and the philippines drag us into a war with china over the south china sea. it is about clever balancing and in any case the u.s. has so much shale oil deposits in texas, louisiana and other places i could name which is about geography that we are going to be because of energy reserves going to be a significant power for decades to come in any case so now is the time to try to get allies and like-minded others to

believe government is a hindrance. but it seems to me people talk about cutting spending. then, of course, when it comes to their actual program, they don't want to cut. we had even the example of governor romney recently suggesting that if we went off the fiscal cliff and we had the spending cuts in defen it was going to kill jobs in virginia. virginia. i mean, you know. it was a program we didn't cut. >> that's we need leadership from the top as governor in gaza. and i will point back into the governors. successful governors do two things really well. they provide leadership and they propose bold initiatives to their legislatures, and they also have a strategy or a blueprint, if you will, for economic growth in their states for the future. those are the successful governors. we need the same type of leadership at the white house. >> no president has had real organization authority since ronald reagan. i would think that needs to come back. i would go so far as to put some back of authority that was lost after the nixon era. but congress has got to help. some committees in congress are n
